Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme

AGED CARE VOLUNTEER VISITORS SCHEME

The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) is funded by the Australian Government.

The ACVVS aims to enrich the quality of life of socially isolated people living in aged care residential facilities who are lonely and would benefit from a friendly visitor.

Volunteer visitors commit to visiting their resident friend at least once a fortnight. Visits are spent doing something both the visitor and the resident enjoy – you might want to read, listen to music, chat and reminisce, or watch a favourite TV program together. You may want to go for a walk together or have an outing. The activities you undertake will depend on the health and interests of the resident.

Sharing your time and your interests with your resident friend will be rewarded with the satisfaction of enhancing their quality of life and perhaps yours too! Volunteer visitors are matched with residents by the ACVVS Coordinator who supports you and helps you to adapt to your role as a volunteer visitor. The ACVVS offers you training and support in understanding the needs of your new friend.

Matches are made taking into account your interests, background, location and when you are available to visit. Most volunteer visitors find that they enjoy the friendship as much as the resident does, and that the relationship is both positive and rewarding.

The Story in Action

This short film clip is part of the Bendigo Bank of Goodwill project and highlights the beneficial interaction between a volunteer visitor and a resident in aged care.  The The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme is integral in breaking down isolation and building friendships. Volunteering Central Coast is very fortunate to have operated the scheme for 25 years.
